About Radon Testing

 Radon is a colorless, odorless, tasteless, and chemically inert radioactive gas. It is formed by the natural radioactive decay of uranium in rock, soil, and water. It can be found in all 50 states.  Once produced, radon moves through the ground to the air above. Testing for it is the only way of telling how much is present. 

 For the duration of the testing period, the building's windows should stay closed. Exterior doors should only be opened momentarily for entering and exiting. The building's heating and air conditioning systems can be operated as usual with the thermostat set between 67-77 ° F. Do not operate whole house fans, fireplaces, or woodstoves. Tampering with the detector or failure to observe these protocols will void the test, and could incur civil penalties.

 Picocuries per liter (pCi/L) is the unit by which levels of radon per liter of air are measured.  A piccocurie is a measure of the rate of radioactive decay of radon. One pCi is one trillionth of a Curie, 0.037 disintegrations per second, or 2.22 disintegrations per minute. Therefore, at 4 pCi/L (picocuries per liter, the EPA's recommended action level), there will be approximately 12,672 radioactive disintegrations in one liter of air during a 24-hour period. 

 Mitigation efforts will create a barrier between the ground and the livable spaces in your home and sucking the gasses below the barrier out to exhaust them above the highest livable level of the house. How you create that barrier depends on your home’s foundation – basement, slab on grade or crawl space. Methods include sealing off entry points and ventilation through an fan-powered system. Such remediation can cost from $700 to $3,500.
